Sequential Spelling

While the Sequential Spelling curriculum is a simple, straight-forward curriculum, the impact that it has had on my daughters’ ability to spell complex words is amazing. Working with the Sequential Spelling curriculum has further convinced me why homeschool students have the ability to learn above and beyond any prescribed grade level. How do you ask? The curriculum presents a child each day with a word that builds, sequentially, off of a pattern (i.e., all, tall, stall, install, installment). As a child learns a set of root words, with each new list, they build onto the root words adding suffixes like, -s, -ed, ent, or –ing. Through this process of sequentially spelling words, they begin to expand the patterns, spelling more complex words. The child learns to recognize patterns as they build onto the root word, with no studying required.

With each new list, we take the time to read through each word and look up definitions, if necessary. As the girls spell each word when they are called out, I look them over immediately for correctness to ensure that the pattern is spelled correctly. If the list is checked at the end and a pattern in a word is misspelled, that incorrectly spelled pattern will trickle down into every other word that is called out. Periodically the girls are tested on a series of patterns from the list that they’ve spelled.
This curriculum is simple and straight-forward and takes a minimal amount time in our school day to execute.

Pros:
- No spelling list to memorize.

- Children have the capability to learn how to spell long, complex words based on learning the spelling of patterned words.

- A child’s confidence is built as they spell longer words.
